Having been a fitness professional for over 20 years I thought I would try CrossFit assuming it would be something that would fit in a couple of times a week with my existing training and see what all the hype was about. I honestly thought it would just be something different to try and that I would continue with my tradition training program that I had been used to for many years.
I could not have been more wrong, it literally has changed my whole outlook on how to train and why I train, at 48 years old I feel stronger now than I have ever felt. The diverse disciplines and challenges that CrossFit presents are exciting, demanding and utterly frustrating at times but incredibly rewarding.

The level of professional coaching is fantastic the environment is always friendly and welcoming. I now train at least 5 times a week at SCUK and it has quite honestly been life changing for me.

When, with some trepidation I walked into Sarum CrossFit, I think that I was looking for something to help me address that seemingly eternal, almost impossible balancing act between life and work. What I found has, quite simply, changed my life. What I found was so much more than a sport, or the distraction that I thought I needed. What I found was a family.

I feel as supported and respected now after two years, as I did on my first day. Every single success is celebrated. Everybody is an athlete. If you’ve tipped up and you’re trying your best, then that’s all that can be asked of you. Your first press up is as important as someone’s podium finish in a competition.

It’s this sense of mutual respect among members that’s the lifeblood of the ‘box’ and it’s what keeps me up each evening, waiting in anticipation for what the next day’s ‘WoD’ might be! There are no mirrors, no machines and no intimidation, and after my first session, there was no looking back.

I joined the community at Sarum Crossfit nearly 3 years ago and have been totally bowled away by the fantastic coaching, community and social element and all round great fun that the sessions provide.

I’ve been challenged mentally, physically and at times emotionally but am fitter and stronger than ever! Thanks team SCUK!

I joined Sarum CrossFit in December 2014, having seen photos of myself from a surfing trip earlier in the year. The camera doesn’t lie, and I was shocked at how much weight I had gained over the 12 months prior to my joining. I had been a member of various gyms for years, but the atmosphere at these places was very individualistic and the ‘bodybuilder’s routine’ had become monotonous and left me with little motivation.

What a revelation SCUK was! The training programme is well thought out, the classes are constantly varied and are extremely well run. In the space of a few months I dropped nearly 10 kilos in weight; and while I still have some way to go towards reaching my own personal goals, I am fitter and stronger than I have ever been.

It would be difficult for me to put a finger on the thing that I like most about training at SCUK! The coach team is superb; the class environments get the best out of you; and the community as whole is fantastic…I have made both some significant gains and some great friends! I would highly recommend CrossFit – and particularly SCUK – to anyone!

I’ve been a part of SCUK almost from the opening day and knew from the first on ramp session I’d found what I’d been looking for.
Due to the support from the coaches and all my friends (fellow members) I have been fortunate to take part in many compititions both team and individual events which is something I never thought I would develop the confidence to undertake.

I need SCUK, it’s become part of me, who I am. Without it I would no longer be a healthy, happy, strong and confident woman.
It means so much more to me than just a place I go to work out. It’s my sanctuary and the place I go to keep and repair my sanity.
It’s crazy to think how many great people I now have in my life which I never would have had if it weren’t for SCUK.

From the moment I experienced my first WOD at SCUK , I felt a different kind of challenge, something alien to me yet at the same time something appealing and in some ways even addictive. SCUK consistently set standards so high his obvious passion and belief in Crossfit spreads among all of his equally talented coaching staff (past & present) fellow members and in fact all who walk into the box, supporters, spectators, friends etc. Long gone are the days of bicep curls and bench days, now the challenges lie in multiple muscle ups and developing PB’s on Olympic movements you would normally only experience on YouTube and setting targets and chasing them down on the daily whiteboard.

For me, I initially only wanted to gain a new level of fitness from Crossfit but over the 2+ years I have been at SCUK I have made some exceptional friends and enjoyed sharing some special moments and some big achievements, in house and national competitions. The feeling of a community is not a myth, James has developed a ‘Leave your ego at the door & only step inside to push your limits’ type ethos that constantly surrounds the perimeters of the box you can literally taste it! The CrossFit kids has been a fantastic step forward in the development of Crossfit locally and seeing people embrace new challenges around me is incredibly inspiring, it keeps my healthy obsession burning brightly to always comeback for more.

You experience Constant disappointments & euphoric successes you never thought possible, it’s just how it is. Some days you will walk away hating the fact you missed that last rep, yet you’ll always come back for more tomorrow. Some days you’ll never want to leave because of what you are achieving, again, it’s just how it is. James & what he has created is something incredibly unique to summarise; it’s a safe, encapsulating, special place that will have you hooked. Safety and standards is paramount to making this work, progressions and creating a personal fitness journey is where it’s at. There are no mirrors, only doors. You enter through a door, you push yourself to your absolute limits on movements you’ve only heard horror stories about (but hey, they’re not that bad), then you go home and think, I can’t wait to go in tomorrow!

No matter what your ability, fitness goal, desire, plans are, SCUK is an absolute must! My only regret, I wish I found it sooner!

Crossfit? That’s a cult right?’ I hear that quite a lot; along with an apparent guarantee that I’ll get injured whilst turning into some kind overly tanned & greased body builder. I’ve been going to SCUK for about a year, I started off on 2 sessions a week as a kind of strength and conditioning for other sports I do. I noticed the difference – I was getting stronger and more confident. I now go about 5 times a week…okay, maybe 6. The results are tangible – I can see that I’m getting fitter and stronger; not just because I can actually do more of the exercises now or lift heavier weights, but also because I can feel the difference. My ability to jump on my bike, go for a run or smash a pool session is definitely better than ever.

SCUK is an awesome community – it’s great seeing people master movements that have been elusive, it’s lovely to see whole families training together, it’s really encouraging to have people offer their advice, guidance and support. People want you to succeed and see you achieve your best. It’s amazing to see so many strong female role models too.

I have more injuries from falling off my bike or falling over out running, I’ve not seen any signs of a cult – just a really strong community, the people here are fit and strong, healthy and positive. Everyone is trying to improve and get better, whatever level they’re at – with training based around all aspects of fitness, it’s training for life. It’s a great place to be, an ace community to be part of and basically, an awesome place to train!

Crossfit had given me so much, for two years now it’s taken me on an incredible personal physical and emotional journey, improving my confidence, strength and happiness along the way. It’s great for those easily bored by regular routines as there are so many different disciplines used selectively in daily workouts. I love the variety, atmosphere and most of all the lovely people who make the gym a supportive fun friendly place.

As someone new to both Crossfit and the Wiltshire area, Sarum Crossfit provided me with a great opportunity to stay fit and meet new people. There is a great sense of comradery at ‘the box’ and as a complete beginner I have only ever felt supported by my coaches and peers, who encourage you to improve at your own pace. I would thoroughly recommend Sarum Crossfit to anyone who wants to get active and make new friends, no matter your current fitness level, age, sex or perceived ability.

In Feb of 2015, I attended Sarum Crossfit for an on-ramp, in the hope that I could finally stick trying to get fit. I’m May 2014, I had complete ACL and MCL reconstruction due to a sporting injury – and joining SCUK is the best life choice I have ever made.

It has opened my eyes to enjoying getting fit, meeting incredible people from all walks of life and having so much fun!

Since joining I have decrease my body fat percentage by 13% and learned so much about how fitness works.

SCUK = People and PB’s!!

I really can’t praise the team at Sarum Crossfit highly enough. The coaches brim with knowledge, skill, enthusiasm and encouragement. Everyone is welcomed with the respect of an athlete no matter what their level of fitness or previous experience and every workout is scaled to the ability of the individual. The atmosphere at Sarum Crossfit is warm, friendly and a lot of fun. My only wish is that I’d found the place sooner.

I have been a member of many gyms, done many different types of exercise and given up on them all and, at the end of 2012 despite my reservations that I was too old, too unfit and terrified of making a fool of myself, James managed to persuade me to try Crossfit. What can I say, I love Sarum Crossfit, the Coaches and the people! We are all ages, shapes and sizes, levels of fitness and ability but at SCUK none of that matters – we are a team and support one another unconditionally and cheer each other on. I have achieved things I never dreamt were possible (or even knew I wanted to do!). I have laughed and cried and been inspired by the sheer determination and hard work of the Coaches and Members. All the coaches are brilliant, endlessly encouraging and patient. James has created an amazing Community, you only have to go in on a Saturday during “Team WOD” or the Opens to experience and be part of the SCUK spirit – it is a phenomenal place with phenomenal people (and great coffee).
